Safe Baby and Kid Shampoo Guide

What is shampoo composed of?

Shampoos have a general purpose of cleansing the scalp. Specific ingredients vary from brand to brand but some basic ingredients that makeup almost every shampoo include water, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, disodium EDTA, polyquaternium-10, fragrance, PEG-150 distearate, citric acid, glycerin, sodium benzoate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, PEG-80 sorbitan laurate, Cocamidopropyl betaine, and decyl glucoside. Most shampoos like Johnson's Baby Shampoo contain sodium trideceth sulfate, which is formulated to act as a low-irritation cleansing agent.

What are the uses of baby shampoo?

Baby shampoo is a hair care product which is used for the removal of oils, dirt, skin particles, dandruff, environmental pollutants and other contaminated particles that gradually build up in the hair or on the scalp. Shampoos like Johnson's Baby Shampoo are specially formulated to be used on infants and young children, i.e, they are less irritating to the eyes than those usually found in regular shampoos. Baby skin is thinner and dries out much faster than adult skin, and therefore a gentle, baby-friendly shampoo should be chosen that can help keep the baby’s skin from getting dry and itchy. This hair wash will cleanse the baby’s scalp gently and will not remove any essential oils from it. It will leave your baby’s hair soft, shiny, clean and smelling good. Baby shampoo acts like a regular soap, however, it can also be used as a shaving cream or to clean bathroom faucets, etc. Some special features of baby shampoo that makes it uniquely suitable for infant use are listed below in depth, let’s take a look.

  • Gentle Cleansing

Baby shampoo gently cleanses the baby’s hair without causing any harm to the scalp. Due to its composition of mild ingredients, it is very suitable for the delicate hair of the baby. It also maintains adequate moisture levels of the scalp and will prevent it from excessive drying.

  • No Tears Formula

A shampoo like Johnson’s Baby Shampoo contains a no tears formula which is safe if accidentally gotten into your baby’s eyes. Its ingredients or composition will not cause any irritation or harm to your baby’s hairs, scalp or eyes.

  • Softer Hairs

Although the hair of newborn babies is already soft and smooth, using a specially formulated baby shampoo makes it even softer and smoother. Child specialist physicians also highly recommend using mild shampoo for baby hair.

  • Pleasant Fragrance

Since shampoos contain fragrance, applying baby shampoo on the baby’s scalp will also leave a pleasant and sweet aroma in your baby’s hair.  This sweet odor will add more beauty to your baby’s scalp without damaging it through harsh chemicals.

  • Minimize Irritation and Dryness

Baby shampoo minimizes the risk of irritation and dryness in your baby’s hair. It also prevents any type of redness or discoloration from affecting the scalp.

What precautions should be taken while using baby shampoo?

Although there are many benefits of baby shampoo, it should still be used with caution as the extra softness and thinness that characterizes baby skin means it can be easily irritated if not taken care of. Shampoos are for external use only and should be kept out of your child’s reach. If skin irritation does occur after use of the shampoo, discontinue using it immediately. A small quantity of shampoo is enough for use on the scalp as baby’s naturally have less hair. As your baby grows older and works towards a full head of hair, the quantity can be increased accordingly. Additionally, it is advisable to keep shampoo out of your baby’s eyes as much as possible, as the eyes are an especially sensitive organ. Tear-free formulas will help with this, however, bath time will be easier and more enjoyable for yourself and your child if you take caution to avoid getting shampoo in the baby’s face. You can work on this by tipping your child’s head back and rinsing the shampoo away from their face. Do not apply the shampoo directly over your baby’s scalp. You should take a small amount of shampoo on a sponge and massage it slowly and gently onto your baby’s head. Cradle caps present on your baby’s head that look like dried milk should be first massaged with almond or any other baby oil, and then shampoo should be used.
